I’m Back
It’s March, and it’s time for VoiceCon 2010 so that means I’m back in Orlando again. Same city, same hotel, same conference — the only thing different is that this is a brand new year. I’ve been here so many times that I’ve lost count.
I wish they would do something to break up the monotony…get crazy…hold the conference in a different hotel or…wait for it…an entirely different city! I guess that’s just too much to ask, so I’m back at the Gaylord Palms Orlando again getting ready for the show. The plus is that I know every nook and cranny of this hotel and conference center now; the downside is that familiarity breeds contempt.
The most interesting part of my day was the trip to the airport early this morning. Forecasts were calling for snow on Saturday night, but since temperatures the previous day were in the 70s, I didn’t think it would stick around. I was wrong. It snowed like crazy, and it just kept falling and falling all night. I woke up and everything was completely covered in snow! It was insane.
We don’t have a three car garage, so our Jeep (the four wheel drive vehicle) was parked outside. It had snow about 6 inches deep all over it — took me and Gary fifteen minutes to get it in driveable condition. Thankfully, Gary decided to drive me to the airport since the roads were in bad shape. As we traversed the snow covered streets, we passed a lot of vehicles that had spun out because they were going too fast for the slick streets. Needless to say, it was an interesting drive. As we got further South near the airport, conditions improved significantly thanks to treated roads and overpasses. At the airport, it got worse again. The ramps going to the terminals weren’t so well treated. They were slick, traffic was bad and some ramps were closed. Welcome to the second day of Spring in Texas. So much for global warming, huh?
Anyway, I finally arrived at the airport and had a fairly uneventful flight to my destination city of Orlando (if you don’t count the wind turbulence and the screaming child in the row behind me). After a quick cab ride in the rain, I made it to the hotel, took a quick break, and then got ready for our evening pre-show meeting. So, that’s the basic recap of my day. The show kicks off tomorrow, and then things will get more exciting. Until then, have a great Monday, everyone!
