Warning: DST Coming Soon
Yes, it’s that time again. The dreaded Daylight Saving Time (DST) is quickly approaching. At 2:00 am on Sunday, March 9 time will “spring forward” giving everyone in North America one additional hour of sunlight in the evenings.
Don’t get me wrong, Ben Franklin’s idea is great. I love having an extra hour of daylight, especially on a nice summer night. The reason I dread the switchover is that I hate the idea of losing an entire hour from my life. Poof! Just like that, it’s gone. According to Webexhibits, in the early part of the 20th century, citizens of Great Britain actually protested the change, using the slogan, “Give us back our stolen hour.” I wouldn’t go that far because you get the hour back. It’s not stolen. It’s simply put aside on “layaway”. The hour is there; you just can’t use it until the Fall when DST ends.
The other downside of DST is that everyone has to wake up an hour earlier every day. If you aren’t a morning person (and I’m not), it’s brutal. It’s something you have to fight through until your internal body clock adjusts. I don’t look forward to that process. In fact, I dread it. If I went to bed early, then it wouldn’t bother me as much, but with that extra hour at night, I don’t want to go to bed early. I’m too busy enjoying my evening.
Ah, I can’t win. I’m conflicted. I both love and hate Daylight Saving Time.
